Reports of Officers and Committees

Antonio Rosales, President: Reported that Kixx cancelled a game late Friday night before a Saturday game and, according to the league rules, a $30 fee should be imposed. The secretary suggested instead that a warning should be issued and all teams reminded of the rule. A vote was held and the managers decided 8-1 to fine Kixx $30. Antonio will send the Kixx manager an e-mail letting her know of the fine.

Brought up discussion of swearing on the field. Asked for any reports of problems from mangers. Brian Peddinghaus reported that his team had played Salsa that month and that the Salsa players had threatened one of Brian’s players, harassed the ref, used foul language, etc. Other managers reported problems with Salsa. A discussion was held regarding what to do about teams that consistently offend. The possibility of Salsa being issued a warning by the league was discussed, but no action was voted on. It was decided that Brain Peddinghaus would talk to the refs and ask them to gather all players around before the game and explain the rules about swearing, arguing with the ref, etc. The hope is that by setting the tone at the beginning of the game, players will be less likely to erupt on the field when something doesn’t go the way they think it should. If the ref does not speak English, managers are asked to step up and hold the discussion with their teams before the game. Managers asked to remind players that only the captain should talk to the ref.

Some managers wondered about the value of the 5-touch rule. It was pointed out that it is hard to monitor consistently and leads to arguments with the ref. Managers asked to poll their teams and get a feeling for whether or not they want to keep the rule. Joe Verdu and Sue Zaharoff pointed out that the rule has long been part of the league and it is there to keep women in the game.

Brian Aicega, Vice President: Has enough paint left for maybe 6 weekends (Alternating with women’s league). A motion was made to approve the purchase of 6 more cases of paint. The motion was approved 9-0. Treasurer to give Brian Aicega a check for the cost. (6 cases at $35/case.)

Sue Zaharoff, Treasurer: At the end of April, the league balance was $7800. She received a refund check from Galvin for $175. She wrote out nine checks to refs in May for a total of $1000. And one check to Round Table Pizza for about $50. At the end of May the balance was $6800. Still need to pay second round of ref fees, plus Sunrise field. But should end up with extra money this year due to all the rained out games. Can use toward rental of artificial fields next year.

Dave Wilson, Registrar:  Thanked everyone for being so understanding during the past month. Expressed appreciation for the league and the people in it. Requested that managers contact him about adding new players, not the players themselves.

Brian Peddinghaus reported that Kixx may have tried to pass off a non-player as a member of their team in a game they played. It was agreed that the matter should be investigated and if in fact the manager lied about the player’s identity, the standard fine and penalty should be imposed:

If a manager is caught using a player without a pass, the team is fined $50 and the manager is suspended for one game.

Managers are reminded that non-registered players are a liability to the league. All players must be registered and have player cards.

Brian Peddinghaus reported that his player cards had been stolen out of his car. All managers agreed to let Brian used an official roster and players’ driver’s licenses (or other form of ID) for the remainder of the season.

Brian Peddinghaus, Ref Coordinator: Everything mostly OK. Said that it was a little hard to keep refs consistently busy due to all the rainouts. Refs like to do two back-to-back games at one field and it’s not easy to offer that every week. Also said that other leagues are paying refs $50/game. All agreed that we need to pay $50 next year.

Luis Medina, Game Scheduler/Webmaster: Asked that managers please let Luis know about make-up games so that he can put them in the schedule and post the results. Managers asked to e-mail Luis with the results of their games ASAP so that he can post the scores.

Reported that Galvin Field is available after all on June 24th. Managers asked to check the website (SCACSL.net) to see if their game has been moved back to Galvin for that day.

Rolf Stevens, Parliamentarian: Absent.

Old Business

The first Sunday of July is 4th of July weekend. So next meeting is July 9th. (Don’t worry, the World Cup final should be over by 6:30.)

New Business

Joe Verdu talked to the mangers of the Kenwood field and it is being reseeded right now but should be available next year. Joe pointed out that drainage is very good on that field so we could use it during the rainy season. Dave Wilson felt that Willowside field was too rutted to use. Brian Aicega reported that John Davis of the Windsor fields said we can rent his fields during the rainy season.

It was suggested that managers talk to their teams before games and remind them that this is a friendly game and they should not lose their cool, use foul language, harass the ref, and so on. Setting off on the right foot may prevent some of the bad behavior we’ve been seeing out on the field.

Brian Aicega pointed out that the women’s league has a system where the league buys all the nets and corner flags and teams rotate them from game to game so that nets do not need to be put up and taken down for each individual game. Suggested that next year maybe we could discuss such an option for our league.

Kick Around is currently scheduled for July 15th at Galvin fields. All managers voted to keep that date for Kick Around rather than sacrificing it to make-up games. Managers asked to contact Luis Medina with an estimate of how many of their players might want to participate. Luis will try to put together a sort of schedule. People will bring BBQs and food and have a BBQ during/after the games. We may vote to use some league funds for refreshments at the July meeting. Teams can play as teams with individual players added on where they are needed. Teams might want to join forces with another team if both teams will only have 5-6 players.

Meeting Adjourned at 8:00 p.m.

Next scheduled meeting: Sunday July 9th  at the Round Table Pizza on Marlow (at Guerneville Road, in the Safeway shopping center) at 6:30 p.m.
